The "F" Bourne gave me on an ad assignment surprised me, as it was the first I'd received in my school career and I thought the work I had presented was acceptable. Not great, but decent. When I asked about the grade in her office after class, sh...

Hey Donica, great to hear from you. Hopefully we can get together for lunch sometime.

Ethics, winter break session: I remember it clearly! I still think it's probably not possible to really teach people ethics without getting into ultimate issues like religion and metaphysics. But, you can probably still trade on people's generally shared moral assumptions about things like truth, lies, cheating, etc. and get them to usefully consider being ethical journalists or whatnot.

Anyway, I'm really glad you're still at the j-school. I still think you're one of the best professors around.

The wider purpose of j-schools

Dan Gillmor, author of "We the Media" and now a professor at the ASU Cronkite School for Journalism and Mass Communication, posted a description of what he thinks journalism schools should be and do in the digital age. Here's the heart of his argument:

Journalism educators should be in the vanguard of an absolutely essential shift for society at large: helping our students, and people in our larger communities, to navigate and manage the myriad information streams of a media-saturated world.Continue

Marketing debt to college students

We talked about this issue briefly in media ethics this past semester -- about the ethics of marketing products in ways that may confuse target groups about what they are actually buying. In this article, the ethical question is about universities who make financial agreements with credit card companies to market to students. Should universities profit from students who buy credit cards and use them, in some cases getting into serious debt? Or should universities make these agreements transparen… Continue

RGJ Summer Internships

The Reno Gazette-Journal is looking for summer 2009 interns in the following categories: news writing, sports writing and photography.

The internship is a paid 12-week commitment. Interns would work directly with current staff members in concept development, story writing and editing as well as other aspects of a newsroom. Again, the three categories we are looking to fill are news writer, sports writer and photographer. However, we may be able to accommodate other needs or strengths an applica… Continue

"Persist! The world needs all you can give."

Here are the closing words of an interview on NPR tonight with Harvard biologist E. O. Wilson:

"You are capable of more than you know. Choose a goal that seems right for you and strive to be the best, however hard the path. Aim high. Behave honorably. Prepare to be alone at times, and to endure failure. Persist! The world needs all you can give."

Chris Bowman, environment writer for the Sacramento Bee, highly recommended this interview from National Public Radio to his graduate class, and I se… Continue

NewsTrust partnership a big success

Thank you to all the students who participated in NewsTrust last week. It was the most successful NewsHunt that the NewsTrust team has sponsored. They've written an excellent blog post summarizing the week's work:

U.S. Economy News Hunt: What Did We Learn?

With a big thanks to everyone who participated, including us:

"...A huge thanks goes out to our entire community, particularly our hosts Marsha and Walter, and our partner… Continue
